Linux kernel 2.6
by Marshall on December 24, 2003
Wow Christmas eve already!
Just spent the last 2 days (on and off) getting my gentoo box working with the 2.6 kernel. I had a heck of a time getting the new built in sound to work properly. For awhile I couldn’t get an xterm as a regular user but a quick usermod -G pts fixed that. I also have udev working and removed devfs which is now depreciated in the 2.6 kernel.
I havn’t had a chance to try out the new ATAPI cd-burning yet, although cdrecord finds my burner just fine now without scsi-emulation.
How is it?
Well, thanks for asking. Up until now I have been using a stock kernel (no optimizations) and the upgrade to 2.6 speeds up Gnome 2.4 noticably. Linux has taken some big steps this year and I can’t wait to see the advances in Linux for the next year. Linux for the masses I say!
