New Default Theme

I coded a new theme today and liked it so much that I decided to make it the default theme. You can change themes from the menu on the left. I also uploaded a golder theme which is in beta. I probably will never finish that theme and might take it off soon. The new theme doesn’t entirely work in Opera yet. For some reason the menu doesn’t want to show up. I re-added the wordpress archives loop in the menu because the old plugin that I was using no longer works with wordpress > 1.2 (??). The new theme also uses png’s with alpha transparencies. I installed this IE browser behavior but havn’t tested it in IE yet. Hopefully when I check it out at work tomorrow everything will be fine. As a backup, I have prepared shitty gif files to replace the nice png’s if all else fails. How is it that the most popular software company in the world can’t make their crappy web browser support a pretty popular web graphic format?

Where is my PNG support Microsoft?!?

WordPress 1.2 upgrade

Lots of site updates today. I wanted to add a new theme for the page, so I choose a grunge style. While trying to get Alex King’s Style Switcher plugin to work I noticed that a new version of WP was out, so I took the daunting task of upgrading. I also cleaned out my html root folder to get rid of some old folders and an old installation of Gallery. Check out the new style from the menu! Thanks go out to malicent from deviartART for her awesome stock photo which inspired the theme.

Photos Section Comming Along

Photos.mickelson.org is comming along very nicely. I didn’t want to use a database to store the images on the site so I made a php script to parse out the contents of a directory and display thumbnails for the images in that directory. After I got it working I realized that portrait oriented pictures do not work with the script that I created. Oh well, no more php coding for me today. I will fix thatin version 2.

Books
I finally finished Catch-22 today. I have to say that the book ended kinda anti-climatically. It seemed like Heller ditched the writing style that kept the entire book so interesting and funny towards the end an especially in the last chapter. Overall it was a good read and was quite funny. I found the parts with Milo Minderbinder most facinating and I wish there was a novel based on his perspective. I still do not understand how his syndicate made money.

After finishing Catch-22, I went to Barnes and Noble and picked up High Fidelity. I went to buy The Coma by Alex Garland but I found High Fidelity while browsing around. The Coma was on the recommended reading list in Cargo magizine.

Summerfest
It has been awhile since I posted anything. Last weekend I went to Summerfest 4 times. Thursday Scott, Kristi and I saw the Big Bang fireworks. Friday I saw Rufus Wainswright with Kendra and Leann. I stayed aroung and saw Ben Folds with Julie and crew and afterward we went to Eve to see Nate. Sunday everyone went to see Jason Mraz. We got down to Summerfest around 1 I think and on the stage where Mraz was playing, a band called Groovology was playing. They were alright. To me they seemed like a band you would hire if you were rich and were hosting a party for your business associates at your mansion, kinda like the party scene in Armed and Dangerous. Recycled Future played next, but withoutt Dave they seem to have lost their luster. It started to rain after Recycled future finished playing and everyone decided to leave. There would be no Jason Mraz for us that night. Monday Jon, Sara, Rob and I went to see Lewis Black. His act has gotten less and less funny each time I have seen him. We caught a bit of Dark Star Orchestra’s first set and then I decided to go home. 4 nights of Summerfest was too much.

Site Updates and Life

I finally got around to installing the Amazon Media Manager for WordPress. I found a photo plugin which I will install later. Right now I am reading Catch 22 right now which I find extremely entertaining and witty.

UpdateYourComputer.com
I started designing the site today. I put an early rough draft up here.

Movies
On Memorial Day we watched Pulp Fiction and The Fly. It was only the second time that I saw Pulp Fiction and it was more amazing then I remembered. Uma’s character Mia was an actress who starred in a Pilot called “Fox Force Five”. Mia’s description of the show sounds very similar to the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad from Kill Bill. It was the first time that I’ve ever seen The Fly and it didn’t disapoint.

Yesterday we saw Super Size Me, a documentary by Morgan Spurlock about the fast food industry which focused on Mc Donalds. Morgan eats nothing but Mc Food for 30 days and documents the effects that it had on him. He gained 17 pounds and his cholesterol jumped from 170 to like 250. Towards the end of the 30 days, he was generally depressed and sick unless he was eating Mc Donalds. I really had no expectations going into the film but I ended up really liking it. It is a good thing that I have boycotted Mc Donalds about a year ago.

On a similar topic, Milwaukee was ranked the 21st fattest cities in 2003 and are now the 22nd most fit city in America according to Mens Fitness

Some interesting facts:

  • Milwaukee far outdistanced every other city for the most drinking establishments, with one watering hole for every 1,600 residents – more than three times the national average.
  • Milwaukee earns the highest score in the nation for the ratio of golf courses and public swimming pools, which of course explains why swimming and playing golf are high on the list of the most popular forms of exercise.

Upgraded to 1.0.2

Just got done upgrading to wordpress version 1.0.2. The admin interface is a lot nicer. During the upgrade I found this backup script which I think should be included in the default install. The upgrade did not solve my <pre> problem so I am going to have to dig deeper into the source code. Browsing through the new admin interface I saw that there was some image options for image uploads. Hopefully this is what I wanted so that I can easily post pictures right in the body of my blogs.

Files Section now online

I finally got to posting the files section. Big thanks to hadess for posting the code for his website, from which I used the files section from.

Links Are Up

I just added the links sections on the right hand side. Now if I could just find time to upload some photos…
